Kiser-Arena Distinguished Professor of Pediatrics, Duke University School of Medicine Beyond the pandemic, the strategies public health leaders use to address testing (and vaccine) equity may inform how we address the larger structural inequalities and consequently improve health and save lives in the long term. Continuing to strengthen testing services and infrastructure, even as more people are vaccinated, will help ensure that everyone knows when and where to get tested. Continued testing also provides a way to track COVID-19 variants and prevent outbreaks. Although vaccines are available for most people, testing remains a life-saving tool for many communities as the percentage of people who are vaccinated varies from place to place.
Communities across the nation are leading with innovative solutions that may ease the burden of the pandemic and create long-term structures that lead to healthier, more equitable communities. The need to focus on building health equity has never been greater. But 2020 underscored the severity of these disparities as some communities were hit much harder than others by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Health disparities have long existed in the United States, leading to shorter, sicker lives for too many people. Read more about the other RADx programs here. There are three other programs: RADx Tech, RADx Advanced Technology Platforms (RADx-ATP) and RADx Radical (RADx-rad). RADx-UP is part of a $1.4 billion dollar National Institutes of Health (NIH) initiative to help speed innovation in the development and implementation of COVID-19 testing. It also includes the funding of a coordinating center.

Phase I of RADx-UP includes the funding of 70 plus community-engaged projects. RADx-UP is also developing strategies to reduce disparities in COVID-19 testing by supporting projects across the country with established community partnerships. RADx-UP is researching COVID-19 testing patterns in communities across the country and data on disparities in infection rates, disease progression and outcomes. RADx-UP is working to help those communities most impacted by COVID-19 across the nation. Many communities across the United States are facing more difficulties than others as they confront the COVID-19 pandemic.
